Where you buy decides which one you can do.
In places the province exempts, like resort towns and smaller communities, you do not have to live in the home. The strata rules and the local licence still apply.
In most BC cities, including Vancouver, Surrey and Victoria, you can rent by the night only in the home you live in, plus one suite or laneway home on the same lot.
